NEARLY 1,500 PAINTINGS including works by Picasso and Matisse, that were stolen by the Nazis, have been discovered in a German flat, a newspaper reported today, putting their total value at around a billion euros.German weekly Focus said the paintings were found in an apartment belonging to the octogenarian son of an art collector who had bought them during the 1930s and 1940s.For nearly half a century, the artworks lay hidden in darkened rooms in the man’s apartment in the southern German city of Munich, Focus said.He had sold a few over the course of the years, living off the proceeds, the paper reported. The collection included many of the great masters of the 20th century, among them the German painters Emil Nolde, Franz Marc, Max Beckmann and Max Liebermann.Among the paintings discovered was one by Henri Matisse that had belonged to the Jewish collector Paul Rosenberg.Rosenberg, who fled Paris leaving his collection behind, was the grandfather of Anne Sinclair, the former wife of the disgraced French politician Dominique Strauss-Kahn.Nazi plunderingThe prosecutor in the southern city of Augsburg, who is reportedly handling the affair, declined to comment on the story, according to German press agency DPA.The Nazis massively plundered artworks in Germany and across Europe before and during World War II, confiscating many from Jews or forcing them to sell their works at a low price.Between 1940 and 1944, German forces seized an estimated 100,000 paintings, artworks, tapestries and antiques from the homes of Jews in France, stripped of their rights by the racial laws enforced by the collaborationist government.Thousands of stolen artworks have since been returned to their owners or their descendants, but many more have never resurfaced. In 2007 a German expert published a book on looted art, estimating that thousands of masterpieces and tens of thousands of lesser works had yet to be restored to their rightful owners.Only last week, an investigation by Dutch museums revealed that 139 of their artworks, including a Matisse and two Kandinsky paintings, may have been stolen by the Nazis.- © AFP 2013eBay: We’re sorry we allowed Holocaust memorabilia to be listed on our website read more
THE SEANAD SAT for just two-days this week, the second time this has happened in the last six weeks, because there are no ministers available to discuss business that had been scheduled for today. The upper house had been due to discuss the Companies Bill and a motion on Youth Justice Policy with Ministers Richard Bruton and Frances Fitzgerald respectively. However, Bruton’s trade mission to India means discussion on the report and final stages of the mammoth Companies Bill has been moved to next Wednesday.Meanwhile, Fitzgerald is due in the Dáil to oversee the passage of the Child and Family Agency Bill, meaning she cannot provide what’s officially titled as ‘An Update on Youth Justice Policy’. This has been deferred to an unspecified later date. All of which means that the Seanad will not sit today, reducing its normal three-day week to a two-day one.It was a similar situation six weeks ago, when the uncertainty over the future of the upper house meant that little-to-no business was scheduled in the week after the referendum on its future was defeated. On 9 October, the Seanad adjourned after a two-day week in which it spent just half-an-hour debating government legislation.Despite introducing a number of Dáil reforms in recent weeks, the government has not yet made any provision for reforming the Seanad. However in the wake of the referendum defeat, the Taoiseach has indicated a willingness to reform the upper house, saying he will look to enact the 1979 referendum result to widen the electorate for the university panels so as that all third level graduates can vote.Previously: The Seanad sat for just two days this weekEnda Kenny tells the Seanad: ‘I come in peace, not in war’‘They’d do an excellent job’: MEP says senators should scrutinise EU legislation read more

Did you catch the light drizzle or showers that moved through midday on Wednesday? Maybe not. Officially, only a trace fell here in Vancouver as of 5 p.m. That was round one of the April-like weather.Today, we have round two and another chance for drizzle or showers. Some areas may get zip, nothing. High temperatures will remain well below average. Then Friday, round three moves over us, bringing measurable precipitation and a chance of afternoon thunderstorms. If you happen to be under one of these, you may experience brief heavy rain.As quickly as the water faucet is turned on Friday, it will shut off by early Saturday morning and the April feel in the air will transition back to June by Sunday with highs near 80 degrees. Then, not to be outdone by April, July weather will enter on Monday and Tuesday with highs well into the 80s. Maybe a 90 here and there if warm air materializes. With such cool air aloft Friday, snow will fall down to about four or five thousand feet in the Cascades. That will be a chilly one for those camping at the high lakes. Snow should cover the ground at Timberline but quickly melt on Saturday. Not a whole lot of rain east of the mountains but windy conditions will exist today from the west. Expect blowing dust and gusty conditions if traveling eastward. On Friday, some of that higher snow could mix down to pass levels, too. Patrick Timm is a local weather specialist. Despite having just reached an incredible milestone for Real Madrid, we will explain the reason Karim Benzema will forever have so many haters. As the people who have always enjoyed Karim Benzema’s game as a forward in European football celebrated his latest conquest, there will always be that unbearable hater who will never understand that the Frenchman is one of those players who is born once every generation. The Lyon product just surpassed the 200-goal barrier with his brace against Viktoria Plzen and this sparked a whole new debate about whether he is the right striker for Real Madrid or not, but Benzema will shut people’s mouths repeatedly until the day he retires because that’s what he does. The best way to understand the type of player that Karim Benzema really is, suffices with only stopping for a few seconds and watch the play from the first goal he scored in the Champions League. This dribbling skill is what sums up Karim in a nutshell, a player who can produce a moment of magic like this can get away with anything and should have credit for as many years as he wants. But if the critics that always come after Karim are so adamant on taking him down want stats, let’s look at the numbers and compare him to other great Real Madrid players who share a spot with him on the 200-Goal Club. 💬 @Benzema…More than 200 goals for @RealMadrid ✅Real Madrid’s fourth highest scorer in European competition ✅Highest-scoring French player in European competition ✅#RMUCL | #HalaMadrid pic.twitter.com/kulft7nepV— Real Madrid C.F. 🇬🇧🇺🇸 (@realmadriden) November 8, 2018No need to talk about anybody else but Raul Gonzalez Blanco, one of Real Madrid’s most respected players and the second all-time top scorer behind Cristiano Ronaldo.During his 16 seasons for the club, Raul Gonzalez played a total of 741 matches and scored 323 goals during that time.Karim Benzema has already played 420 matches and scored 201 goals with the white shirt, this leaves the Frenchman with a 0.47 goal average against Raul’s 0.44.It may not be much but, Benzema has the better goal average compared to Raul and the foreigner somehow gets far more criticism from the press than the beloved Madrid ‘Angel’ ever got.In fact, Raul is arguably one of the most respected players from that institution and he didn’t win as many trophies as Benzema has won during his 9 seasons at the club. The best way that the striker can explain this hatred against him is by saying the following statement after the match against Viktoria Plzen: “When I go out on the field I don’t just want to score goals,” he said to Marca after the match.Zidane reveals Sergio Ramos injury concern for Real Madrid Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Zinedine Zidane has put Sergio Ramos’ availability for Real Madrid’s trip to Sevilla next weekend in doubt after withdrawing him against Levante.“I want to give assists, play, score goals… what a striker does. It’s always the same but I play football to make history and sometimes people don’t understand what I do on the pitch.”“But it doesn’t bother me anymore because I’m 30 years old, I have children and I don’t think about these things,” he concluded.🔝⚽ @Benzema200+ goals for @RealMadrid!#HalaMadrid pic.twitter.com/4pECO0WXky— Real Madrid C.F. 🇬🇧🇺🇸 (@realmadriden) November 7, 2018But we don’t really need to do much in order to change this negative energy directed at Karim Benzema, the solution has been in front of our noses this whole time. What Real Madrid needs to do in order to let this wonderful player be his own man, is to just change the number he wears on the back of his jersey. You are reading this correctly, if Karim Benzema didn’t have the number ‘9’ shirt and maybe another number like the ’11’ or ’10’, he wouldn’t get so much criticism for not scoring as many goals as a proper striker should.Karim gives so much more to the game than just goals, if the club brought another player like Harry Kane and give him that number, it would be very beneficial for everybody and Benzema would finally feel free to keep playing the gorgeous football he’s always shared with all of us.From the Ronaldo.com team, we urge Real Madrid to hear our request and remove the number ‘9’ shirt from Karim Benzema’s back. They each turned a moment of violence into a call to action. For James Brady, that moment came when he was shot and wounded by a would-be presidential assassin. For Chung Eun-yong, it was the killings of his two children during the Korean War.Brady took up a personal campaign for increased gun control after surviving a head wound when a man tried unsuccessfully to kill President Ronald Reagan, for whom Brady was press secretary. Chung began a years-long quest for justice, which eventually prompted the U.S. Army to acknowledge having killed civilian refugees at No Gun Ri.Brady and Chung, who died within days of each other in August, are among the notables who left the world in 2014.Others included political figures who catalyzed war and peace and scientists who changed our lives. And we lost beloved entertainers, some remembered for bringing audiences decades of smiles and tears and others who left the stage long before their time.Among the political figures who died in 2014 was Ariel Sharon a hard-charging Israeli general and prime minister whose efforts to reshape the Middle East caused some to call him a war hero and others a war criminal. Another was Marion Barry, the former Washington, D.C., mayor whose accomplishments were often overshadowed by his arrest for drug use.British politician Tony Benn, former Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, Polish leader Wojciech Jaruzelski and former Georgia president Eduard Shevardnadze also died this year.Among scientists and innovators was Rostislav Belyakov, the chief designer of the Russian MiG fighter jets, Nobel Prize winner Martin Perl, who discovered a subatomic particle, and S. CNET is taking a bet on long-form reporting. New content from the “Life, Disrupted: Road Trip 2016” series will continue on CNET through the first half of September. “I tried to use the team that we had in place to maximum affect,” Guglielmo says. “CNET is generally desktop and mobile; mobile readership is growing; we’re seeing the photo galleries and video stream getting a lot of attention because people on their mobile devices like to consume a lot of video. These are not unique to CNET; we’re just seeing that what these trends are is validated,” Guglielmo tells Folio:. “We want to have readers reading original content — we’re seeing that they’re doing that.” Reporters were equipped with smartphones and asked to immerse themselves in camps. Photographers and videographers were dispatched in some locations. The result was a comprehensive package detailing both the technological limitations of global refugee camps, and the lived-experience of reporters on location — presented to the audience in the form of video diaries Guglielmo says were inspired by Matt Damon in The Martian. Though produced under the title of CNET’s annual summer Road Trip feature, this is the first time the coverage has taken on an issue of this magnitude. Last year, the team looked at where Silicon Valley innovation could be found across the globe. Before that, the series featured a single reporter writing tech stories as they traveled on a literal road trip. This summer, the consumer-facing technology publication, known for its product reviews and how-to tips, mobilized reporters from around the world to report on the global refugee crisis. This year, there isn’t a set sponsor, but traffic for the project is higher than ever. “If we do find a story that we want to tell that requires a resource commitment, we can pool our resources. From a publishing perspective, it’s proved valuable.” That all changed when Guglielmo joined in March 2014. Guglielmo was tasked with expanding the CNET coverage and audience. She was also part of the team that launched the quarterly print magazine that November. Guglielmo is quick to say that CNET isn’t launching any form of international bureau beyond its limited number of foreign correspondents. However, more than a dozen reporters were mobilized for this project. The primarily San Francisco-based American reporters flew out to Greece, while reporters already in Europe and Australia covered stories in their regions. In a world of aggregated reporting and 15-second engagement averages, funding an international serial report may seem unintuitive. But Connie Guglielmo, editor-in-chief of CNET News, tells Folio: it’s paying off. “Life, Disrupted,” which launched August 3, is a month long investigation into how technology benefits or hinders people in refugee camps. CNET, which is part of CBS, is bucking the trend over the last decade which saw major news outlets closing international bureaus in favor of outsourced and syndicated coverage. “We saw the success of our package last year which proved two things — that people still want original content, original reporting, and that in many cases they’re interested in long-form pieces, which was always a great surprise,” Guglielmo says. The Silicon Valley feature was the single most successful news package of 2015, Guglielmo says. While she wouldn’t share metrics on how well the story did, it was well enough for her to justify funding the on-location investigative project. read more

Chevrolet/Screenshot by Andrew Krok/Roadshow When Chevrolet introduced the 2020 Corvette to the world last night, it included some teasers of future related products. In addition to a glimpse of the drop-top Corvette Convertible, Chevrolet also gave us a sneak peek at its next race car, and it’s a stunner. While we were only able to pull some stills from Chevrolet’s low-quality livestream, which makes the Zapruder film look like an IMAX masterpiece, what you see here is the next iteration of Corvette to head to the racetrack. The C8.R only showed up for a few seconds, and while we’re still very light on details, we can make some educated guesses here. We’ll start with what we can actually see. The exterior looks pretty true to the form of the C8, albeit with some enhancements to the car’s aerodynamic profile, like the massive wing out back or the small canards on the front bumper. In addition to the standard headlights above the front bumper, there are also some much more powerful LEDs hanging out where the fog lights would normally go. Enlarge ImageYep, that sure looks like a race car, alright. Chevrolet/Screenshot by Andrew Krok/Roadshow We were also able to grab a quick picture of the interior, which looks about as empty as you’d expect a race car’s interior to be. There’s a roll cage, a steering wheel littered with buttons and a camera-based rearview system that can tell the driver how quickly a vehicle is approaching from behind. That last little bit of tech has made its way into Chevrolet’s backup camera system on its passenger cars, with growing warning triangles alerting drivers of encroaching obstacles.Everything else is up for debate. The C8.R’s predecessor, the C7.R, used a 5.5-liter V8 producing about 491 horsepower. Power will likely stay near the same level, but it’s unclear what engine Chevrolet will actually tuck behind the driver. Chevrolet will likely stick the C8.R in the same racing classes as before — LMGTE for Le Mans, and GTLM for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship — pitting it against other mid-engine competitors from Ferrari, Ford and Porsche.Even without the racing version, the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette is shaping up to be a proper performer. Its 6.2-liter dry-sump V8 will put out 495 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque with its optional performance package, allowing for a sprint to 60 miles per hour in under 3 seconds. And that’s the base model, which will have a starting price below $60,000. The platform was built with electrification in mind, so we might see a hybrid or even a battery-electric variant in the future. It’s also loaded up with technology, including a clever front-nose-lift system that uses GPS to ensure you don’t forget about that one nasty speed bump in the next town over.Enlarge ImageThe C7.R is still performing admirably, so there’s a lot of pressure on the C8.R to keep that train movin’. Obed Radiowala, also known as Ubaidullah Abdulrashid Radiowala, has been deported to India to face charges of attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy. Radiowala was known for his link to the conspiracy to murder Bollywood director Mahesh Bhatt in 2014. He was also charged for firing at Bollywood filmmaker Karim Morani. In addition to this, he was also charged for possessing illegal firearms, reports Indian Express. In 2015, on the request of CBI, Interpol had also issued a red corner notice for Radiowala after Maharashtra’s crime branch issued a non-bailable warrant. The 46-year-old convict fled to the US and was later captured by Newark’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) in 2017 for illegally staying in the country. He was staying at Newark’s ERO detention facility until the concerned authorities could give him to India.”He was wanted in India on charges of attempted murder, criminal conspiracy, extortion, forgery, cheating, theft, abetment, use and possession of illegal firearms, and transmission of information by using the internet to form an organised crime syndicate,” the US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement said. After his arrest in New Jersey, an immigration judge ordered for his removal from American soil.”This individual’s long list of criminal charges in his home country, including attempted murder, show that he was a danger to the community here in the US,” John Tsoukaris of the ERO Newark field office director was quoted as saying by Indian Express. This comes at a time when India has been requesting extradition of people with criminal backgrounds.
