For what seems like an eternity, Microsoft has held the number one spot in several key areas of the computing world. Windows remains by far the most widely-installed operating system, and Office the top-selling productivity suite. But they may now have slipped back to the number two spot in a couple very important areas: webmail and browsing.According to Google’s numbers, Gmail is now the world’s most popular webmail app with an active user base of 425 million and counting. If Google really has taken over the top spot here, it shouldn’t come as a surprise. With one million new Android device activations every single day and Gmail pushed during the first run, it stands to reason that new users would be arriving in droves. Accounts are also pushed on Google.com, Youtube, in Chrome, and pretty much everywhere else Google pops up online.Comscore isn’t convinced that Hotmail has been ousted, however. Their data pins monthly unique visitors to Hotmail at 325 million and Gmail at 289 million. It’d be hard to call a Gmail user “active” if they’re not even checking in once a month. There is, of course, the possibility that Comscore’s numbers are off. You’d certainly hope Google knew (and reported) the correct count, but sometimes it’s more important to flaunt the biggest number you can.And speaking of big numbers, Chrome hit version 20 this week. In addition to no longer being a “teenager,” Google reported that Chrome is now the most popular browser on the web. VP of Chrome Sundar Pichai says there are now 310 million regular users. The folks at StatCounter won’t be at all surprised by this news. They predicted back in January that Chrome would overtake IE for the top spot, and that the changeover would happen in the middle of this year. Recent numbers from both StatCounter and Commscore showed that the gap was incredibly narrow — and even that Chrome may have squeaked past, but it now looks pretty official. With 8 of the top 25 most-visited sites on the web (and even more of AdSense and Analytics users) pumping data into Mountain View, it’s hard to imagine that their figures would be off.via The Register and V3
More than 130 people gathered outside of U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s office to rally against the nomination of U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh on Friday in Juneau. (Photo by Rashah McChesney/Alaska’s Energy Desk)After a tense day of confirmation hearings on Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh, Meredith Trainor was having trouble sleeping.Listen now“I was so upset about the way the Kavanaugh hearing went. I was really upset about the way the Senators on the judiciary committee treated Christine Blasey Ford and it felt really important to do something here in Juneau,” Trainor said.Psychology professor Christine Blasey Ford has accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her when the two were teenagers.Afterwards, Trainor, a Juneau resident, logged onto Facebook and created an event asking the community to meet her outside of U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s office on Friday. She wanted to rally in support of Blasey Ford and oppose fast-tracking Kavanaugh’s nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court. Then, she said, she went to bed.By noon on Friday, people were streaming into the narrow parking lot of Murkowski’s office with signs, bells, drums. Eventually, more than 130 people showed up.Trainor said, she’s not surprised by the turnout.“You know we have a Senator who happens to be in a very powerful position within the current congressional leadership and Sen. Murkowski, in addition to being well positioned to weigh-in and to potentially change the direction of what happens in the future with the supreme court – I think her being a woman is very significant,” Trainor said.Right around the same time, 900 miles away, another crowd gathered at Murkowski’s office in Anchorage. There, about 150 people had a similar message.“She’s the only Republican I’ve ever voted for, and I think she’s in a very difficult position and we are hoping and praying that she does the right thing,” Kim O’Brien said.O’Brien feels that if Murkowski votes for Kavanaugh — it would be a betrayal.“She’s a swing vote, and we want to swing her in the right direction. The direction of morality. And, respect for women and the American public,” O’Brien said. There were demonstrations in other parts of the state as well.In Petersburg, a city in Southeast Alaska with about 3,000 residents — a protest organized late this morning had about 25 people by noon.In Fairbanks, the Daily Newsminer reports that about 40 people gathered outside of Murkowski’s office.Meanwhile, in Washington D.C., Murkowski joined Arizona Senator Jeff Flake in calling for an delay of the confirmation vote. Senate Republicans have agreed to a one-week delay and President Donald Trump has called for an additional FBI investigation into Kavanaugh.Abbey Collins, Orin Pearson and the Fairbanks Daily News Miner contributed to this story. read more
Stewardesses from Jet Airways (L) and Etihad Airways listen to a news conference by Naresh Goyal, chairman of Jet Airways and James Hogan, chief executive of Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Airways, (both not seen) during a news conference in New Delhi July 23, 2014. [Representational Image]ReutersIndia’s major private airlines Jet Airways’ rescue plan is scheduled to be discussed for approval on Monday. Etihad board will be deciding the on the proposed plan which will witness a major change in the promoters’ shareholding, financial daily Business Standard has reported. As per the final resolution plan, Chairman Naresh Goyal’s stake will stand at 17 per cent from the existing 51 per cent. Moreover, he will have to step down from the board as demanded by Jet’s joint venture partner Etihad. In picture: A Jet Airways aircraft in Leh. [Representational image]Twitter/Jet AirwaysThe resolution plan seeks to Etihad holding 24.9 per cent in Jet, marginally up from its 24 per cent current stake. The State Bank of India-led consortium of lenders will own 30 per cent, while new investors National Infrastructure Investment Fund will hold 20 per cent in the beleaguered airline. The resolution plan has been in the pipeline for a long time and it went through multiple changes due to lack of agreement among all the stakeholders. Abu Dhabi-headquartered airline Etihad has raised serious apprehensions about the structuring of the deal, but it is learned that Etihad board will give its go-ahead to the plan as ‘they have got virtually everything they wanted”. In the highly vibrant market, Etihad is very much keen taking control of an airline. After along deliberations, Jet founder Goyal and Etihad signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) based on the recast deal. Seemingly adamant Naresh Goyal did want to dilute his stakes in the airline he founded but Etihad was entirely against his wish. In fact, Etihad also wanted Goyal to be out of the Airline board which is expected to happen soon.Etihad has been continuously investing in Jet Airways as the airline also wants a pie from the fastest growing domestic market. The strategic ties between India and the UAE have helped as a catalyst. But Etihad has its own set of challenges including and restructuring its network and fleet orders.Notably, Jet has already grounded its 40 per cent of its fleet along with cancelling hundreds of flights across routes. The situation has become so critical that its lessors have threatened to take away planes if a consensus on the resolution is not reached by end of the month. The airline has defaulted on its repayment of the loans for several times in the past. Also, the salaries of its staff have been delayed for months now. read more
French former culture minister and newly elected head of UNESCO Audrey Azoulay addresses a press conference following her election on 13 October, 2017 at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. Photo: AFPFrench former culture minister Audrey Azoulay was named to head the UN’s embattled cultural agency on Friday, beating her Qatari rival after a politically charged contest clouded by Gulf tensions and accusations of anti-Israel bias.Azoulay, 49, came from behind after six rounds of voting to defeat Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al-Kawari, also a former culture minister, after he failed to pick up support from other Gulf states which are part of a Saudi-led coalition blockading Qatar. The vote was 30 to 28.The campaign to succeed UNESCO’s outgoing chief Irina Bokova was overshadowed by Washington’s announcement Thursday that it planned to withdraw from the Paris-based body after years of tensions over decisions seen as critical of Israel.Israel itself announced shortly afterwards that it would follow suit.Azoulay, who is Jewish of Moroccan origin, will face the difficult task of trying to persuade the United States and Israel to remain as members, as well as tackling the allegations of anti-Israel bias.Just as daunting will be her job of reforming the agency struggling under the weight of a bureaucracy that has become unwieldy over the seven decades since its foundation.French President Emmanuel Macron hailed her victory on Twitter, saying: “France will continue to fight for science, education and culture in the world.”Speaking to journalists before Friday’s vote, Azoulay said if elected she would “restore the effectiveness and credibility” of UNESCO, which she said was undergoing a “deep political crisis”.Azoulay had edged out Egyptian rights activist Moushira Khattab earlier Friday as the main challenger to Al-Kawari, the frontrunner until the final run-off.Arab states believed the job of director-general of the 195-member organisation should go to one of them for the first time, but regional rivalries and the US and Israeli withdrawals undercut their ambitions.Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, who was in Paris for the vote, “urged all his friends to vote for France” instead of Qatar in the final round, a member of Khattab’s delegation told AFP.Egypt is part of the coalition led by Saudi Arabia that has been blockading strategically placed Qatar since June over its alleged support for radical Islamists and its ties to Iran.Shoukry also raised concerns over the integrity of the vote in a meeting with outgoing UNESCO chief Irina Bokova, his spokesman said.- Arab divisions -In the face of the Arab divisions, France presented Azoulay as a consensus figure who could mend fences and soothe tensions caused by recent resolutions against Israel.”Now more than ever UNESCO needs a project… which restores confidence and overcomes political divisions,” the French foreign ministry said in a statement reacting to the US pullout.Lebanon’s candidate Vera El-Khoury, who bowed out at the fourth round of voting, told AFP that the power game at play in the race had shown UNESCO members “did not give a damn” about the candidates’ programmes.Qatar has generously funded UNESCO in recent years and lobbied intensively for the post, which would have helped bolster its international status at a time when it faces isolation in the Gulf.Al-Kawari had also been dogged by old allegations of anti-Semitism after the Simon Wiesenthal Center accused him of remaining silent about anti-Semitic books at a fair in Doha when he was culture minister.- US walkout -UNESCO is best known for producing a list of World Heritage sites including tourist favourites such as the Grand Canyon or Cambodia’s Angkor Wat, but it also runs science, media training and cultural programmes internationally. The US decision to withdraw, which is to take effect on December 31, 2018, underlined America’s drift away from international institutions under President Donald Trump.Washington has walked out on UNESCO once before, in 1984, after a row over funding and alleged anti-US bias.Washington returned to the fold in 2002, seeing UNESCO as a vehicle for combatting extremism in the wake of the September 11, 2001, attacks. But in 2011 relations soured again after UNESCO admitted Palestine as a full member, prompting the US to cut its funding to the organisation, leaving a gaping hole in its finances. In just over a year as culture minister under Socialist president Francois Hollande, Azoulay secured a budget increase for her ministry after years of deep cuts. read more
Square Enix has surprised gamers today by announcing that it is set to port and re-release the first eight games in the main Dragon Quest series for mobile devices. So Dragon Quest, Dragon Quest II, Dragon Quest III, Dragon Quest IV, Dragon Quest V, Dragon Quest VI, Dragon Quest VII, and Dragon Quest VIII will all be getting a mobile outing for both Android and iOS devices. So far the ports are only confirmed as heading to Japan, but it seems likely Square Enix will release English versions of the games in other territories. Why wouldn’t they? A lot of the translation work has already been done from previous releases of the games. It’s not just the main Dragon Quest series that is heading to mobile devices, though. Square Enix has also announced Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light is in development for iOS and Android. Monsters is a spin off series of Dragon Quest, which sees the focus put on capturing and breeding monsters that are then used by the player to fight. This decision by Square Enix to port so many of the games from a key series demonstrates the growing importance of mobile to game developers/publishers. Where as before we’d expect Dragon Quest releases on dedicated games consoles and handheld devices, now the focus is switching to smartphones and tablets. Sure, these are old games, but Square Enix wouldn’t spend the time re-releasing them if it didn’t think there was a healthy profit to be made. The latest title in the Dragon Quest series–Dragon Quest X hasn’t seen a release outside of Japan on either of its launch platforms: the Wii and Wii U. And that seems unlikely to happen now as Square Enix has turned its focus to getting the game running on a tablet instead. That combined with the publisher’s new focus on free-to-play could mean the next new game developed in the Dragon Quest series may end up appearing on mobile devices first. read more
Windows 7 to Linux: Preparations by Martin Brinkmann on September 17, 2018 in Linux – Last Update: October 15, 2018 – 70 commentsThis is the first part of a series of articles that describes how to migrate from a Windows 7 device to a device running Linux. The main motivation behind the series of tutorials is to provide Windows 7 users with instructions to migrate to a Linux distribution and not to Windows 10.Support for Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system ends in January 2020. While Enterprise customers may extend the support phase by three years by paying Microsoft for extended support, that is not an option for regular users.Microsoft would like for the bulk of users to migrate the device to Windows 10, or buy a new device and use Windows 10 on it. While that is probably the case for most users, some dislike Windows 10’s Windows as a Service approach, are concerned about privacy issues, or generally would prefer to use a free open system instead of a closed one.The best option for these users is to migrate to Linux. Migration to a different operating system is a daunting task, however. One has to learn new skills but before all that, select one of the many Linux flavors out there. It is also something that requires quite a bit of time. In this part of the series, I’m going to look at the broader picture and suggest some things that users interested in exploring the Linux option may want to look at.Other parts:Part 2: Windows 7 to Linux: Backup and Media creationLet the preparations beginThere are quite a few questions that need to be answered when it comes to making the switch from Windows to Linux, and users may have concerns as well.Questions that may come up include:Which Linux distribution to choose?Whether a program or a viable alternative is available on Linux. How to migrate data to Linux.Whether Linux supports a certain feature. If they need antivirus software. How to properly secure the system. As a start, check out Jack Wallen’s article on easing the migration from Windows to Linux. While written in 2009, it is ageless.Choosing the right Linux distributionSome questions can’t be answered until after you look at distributions. One of the greatest strengths of Linux is that most distributions are also provided as Live systems that you can boot from DVD or USB Flash Drive without installation.Live systems are great for getting a feel for a particular flavor of Linux and testing things. It is usually possible to install the Linux distribution directly from the Live environment. What are the criteria for choosing a Linux distribution? That depends a lot on the user but also on requirements. Most Windows users probably don’t want to start with a hardcore Linux distribution like Arch; a distribution that behaves a lot like Windows is probably the better choice.System requirements are not an issue usually as most Linux distributions run really well even on older hardware. While it is certainly beneficial if the system has a lot of RAM and a good processor, it is by no means a requirement. It is still recommended to check the hardware requirements to make sure your hardware is supported. Here are four Linux distributions that you may want to take a closer look at first:Linux MintUbuntuManjaroZorinTip: You can check out the top Linux distributions on Distrowatch. Why these and not others? There are certainly other Linux distributions out there that fill the requirements. The four make things easy during installation and use; while it is still possible to run powerful under the hood commands on all of them, it is usually not required to use the command line during day to day operations, or at all but that depends on individual requirements.General recommendation:Download the ISO images of these distributions and any other that sounds interesting to your device.Burn them to DVD or use software like AutoBootdisk or Rufus to create bootable USB drives.Alternative: Use a VM environment, e.g. the free VirtualBox to install the Linux distributions in a virtual environment for testing.Run the Linux distributions as Live systems to check them out. How you do that depends entirely on you. You could:Check out the default software that comes with.Test playback functionality for media.Try an Office solution.Check if web browsers and services are supported that you want to use, or try new ones.Browse software repositories to find new software or programs for certain tasks.Check Settings, privacy options, and other preferences.Find out about Software supportNot all Windows programs are available on Linux. Some, like Firefox, Chrome, Thunderbird or LibreOffice, are cross-platform. If you use those, you can use them on Linux as well.Others, like Adobe Photoshop, Paint.net, QuiteRSS, or KeePass are not available as native applications. It is recommended that you research which software is available and which is not to get a clearer picture of what is missing.Tip: Check out Mike’s Windows alternatives in Linux guide for a list of suggested alternatives.Create a list of applications that you require and find out for each of the programs whether it is available for Linux, if it runs using Wine, or if alternatives are available. You can open the programs applet of the Control Panel for a list of installed software on the Windows 7 machine, or create a list of installed programs using various programs. You have three main options when it comes to Windows programs that are not available on Linux:Use Wine to run the Windows software on Linux (won’t work for all apps).Use a Virtual Machine and a Windows installation to run Windows software.Find a suitable alternative and start using it.We will cover these in a future article; rest assured that at least one of the options is available for any program that you may want to run on the Linux system. It is usually a good idea to run Internet searches such as “Ubuntu Adobe Photoshop”, “Linux Mint Office alternative” or “Manjaro install Chromium” to find out about software support.Other Things you may want to test and doSoftware support is certainly essential for many users but so may be other things. Can you play Netflix or Amazon Video streams on Linux? What about mp3 playback or a gallery app for your photo collection? It is a good idea to test these things to make sure they are available. One option that you have in that regard is to try and stay on the Linux system to find out if you can do all the things that you do normally on the Windows 7 PC.The simulation may require some prepping though, for instance by moving some media files on a Flash drive to play them on the Linux device or copying documents to the drive to work on them using one of the available Office applications. You may also want to create a backup of important data on the Windows 7 PC or all of it. You can use any backup software for that, for instance the free Paragon Backup & Recovery. A program like Clonezilla may be better as it is cross-platform.Another interesting option for users who plan to run Windows in a virtual environment is to create a virtual copy of the existing Windows 7 installation that you may then use when you run Linux to run Windows software or access the old operating system.SummaryArticle NameWindows 7 to Linux: PreparationsDescriptionThis is the first part of a series of articles that describes how to migrate from a Windows 7 device to a device running Linux.Author Martin BrinkmannPublisher Ghacks Technology NewsLogo Advertisement read more
Yesterday, the ReactOS team announced the release of ReactOS 0.4.11. This release comes with improvements in the kernel for better overall system stability, support for manifests, and more. Following are some of the updates ReactOS 0.4.11 comes with: Kernel improvements ReactOS 0.4.11 comes with substantial updates in the interface that allow operating systems to talk with storage devices. Nowadays, computers generally use SATA connections and the corresponding AHCI interface. To support this interface, ReactOS relies on the UniATA driver. But, this driver was not supported by the 6th generation of Intel’s Core processors (Skylake). The team has now resolved this incompatibility enabling users to test ReactOS on more modern platforms. Support for manifests Applications often depend on other libraries in the form of dynamic link libraries (DLLs), which are loaded by the loader (LDR). One way these dependencies are specified is with the help of manifests. In the previous versions of ReactOS, manifests were not properly supported. ReactOS 0.4.11 comes with sufficient support for manifests, which has also widened the range of applications that can run in ReactOS. With this support added, ReactOS can now run applications like Blender 2.57b, Bumptop, Evernote 5.8.3, Quicktime Player 7.7.9, and many others. USETUP improvements ReactOS 0.4.11 comes with major improvements in the USETUP module. The goal behind these improvements was to enable users to upgrade an existing installation of ReactOS. This is also a step forward towards making ReactOS an actual system OS with the ability to update without the loss of any data and configuration. Testing In this release, the team has restructured the test results page to better encapsulate the relevant information. In addition to the overall conclusion of the test, users will now also be able to see details such as tracking what drove a particular conclusion and the workarounds that they might themselves attempt. Support for network debugging and diagnosis programs ReactOS 0.4.11 now supports various network debugging and diagnosis programs as a result of work done in TCP and UDP connection enumeration. With this update, the ReactOS team aims to make the platform useful for not just running applications, but also to debug them. To read the full list of updates in ReactOS 0.4.11, check out the official announcement. To get Travelweek delivered to your agency for free, subscribe here.TORONTO — Ancillaries have gone from one-off add-ons to revenue behemoths for the airlines and now, smarting from rising fuel costs, many airlines are opting to bump up ancillaries – most recently, fees for checked baggage – instead of raising base fares.Keeping base fares low means prices look good in a highly competitive environment, but where does that leave agents?Every agent who made it through the commission caps and cuts in the mid to late 1990s knows that airline commissions are nowhere near what they used to be, but there’s still money to be made on most fare classes, and with overrides. But when the non-commissionable ancillaries go up – while commissionable base fares remain static – agents are left out in the cold.“Our members are frustrated with ‘surcharges and fees’ and every time there is a new one being imposed and an increase in existing fees, it triggers the frustration,” says ACTA’s Heather Craig-Peddie, VP Advocacy and Member Relations.ACTA has been pushing back against NCFs (non-commissionable fees) for years, not just with airlines but cruise lines too, as well as tour operator currency surcharges.“ACTA’s stance on NCFs is that all fees that are not taxes should be in the base fare and all ancillary fees should be commissionable,” says Craig-Peddie.The wave of baggage fee increases from major airlines in both the U.S. and Canada has highlighted the gap between rising ancillary fees and static base fares all over again. In recent weeks both Air Canada and WestJet announced fee increases for both the first checked bag (from $25 to $30) and the second checked bag (from $30 to $50). Delta, JetBlue and United have also bumped up their checked bag fees. Transat recently announced that it was standardizing its Eco Fares for its transatlantic, South, Canadian and U.S. destinations, part of a policy change the carrier says aligns its flexibility conditions with those of the airline industry. The move includes new checked bag fees for Eco Budget fares.More news: Transat calls Groupe Mach’s latest offer “highly abusive, coercive and misleading”Ancillaries are a key part of the trend that’s seeing carriers add low-fare, high-restriction basic economy fare classes, which most agents avoid or decline to book because there’s no money to be made. Agents may also have to deal with negative feedback from clients booking basic economy fares, even when those clients say they know what they’re getting into. The same often goes for low-cost carrier fares. For the airlines, thought, the sky’s the limit for ancillary opportunities with both basic fares and the LCC model. And the airlines are looking for ways to boost revenue. The cost of jet fuel has gone up 50% in the past year, prompting airlines around the world to sharply downgrade their profit expectations. Delta says its fuel costs jumped $654 million in Q2 2018 versus Q2 2017.Airline ancillary revenue consultant IdeaWorksCompany, in conjunction with CarTrawler, has done an annual review of ancillary revenues since 2007. That first year, the top 10 airlines, ranked by total ancillary revenue, generated US$2.1 billion in ancillary revenue. By 2017, that number had jumped to $29.7 billion.ACTA has and will continue to raise the thorny issue of NCFs globally through the World Travel Agents Associations Alliance (WTAAA), and push for change not only in Canada, but worldwide.Adds Craig-Peddie: “We understand why, in an industry that competes globally, an airline may choose to show their pricing the way they do. However our point of lobby has always been to understand why these additional fees are separated from the base fare and if agents are selling ancillary fees as part of their services, which they do, then they should receive compensation for selling these services.”At the same time, she adds, agents should provide their clients with the best options available. “Knowing the products of your suppliers, a consumer may be better served by paying more for a certain fare that includes the baggage fee.”More news: Onex paying big to get WestJet and that will send airfares soaring, says CWTUnderlining the problem, Craig-Peddie offers this experience from a travel agent and ACTA member. “A recent comment from a member in Alberta stated that on an international flight they booked for a customer, the rate was posted at $75 per person each way. Adding $300 on an international flight for a couple to check their bags is a significant cost to the overall cost of the flight.”IATA’s latest global passenger traffic data for August 2018 shows a 6.4% rise in air travel demand year over year, with a 5.5% capacity increase, keeping load factors steady with a 0.7% percentage point rise to 85.3%, the highest for any month since at least 1990.“The industry experienced continued strong traffic growth in August, putting the cap on a very good peak travel season,” says Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s Director General and CEO. “The all-time record load factor reflects that airlines are maximizing the efficiency of their assets at a time of rising fuel prices and other costs that are limiting the opportunities for low fare stimulation.”The demand for air travel is at an all time high, load factors are good and prices are steady even as fuel costs take a bite out of profits. But the only way for non-commissonable ancillaries to go is up. read more
Most visiting anglers come to this country with either marlin, sailfish, or tarpon on their bucket list. These are all spectacular fish and great angling challenges, available almost any day of the year – but they are not always around in great numbers, or they at times pass through periods when they are just not going to eat. Another drawback is that some anglers just can’t handle the open ocean, and a day being seasick is not going to be the highlight of your vacation.Fortunately, there is an inshore fishery here that has quite a plethora of species. One can only be called sexy, like a sleek race car: The roosterfish should be on every visiting angler’s bucket list. They are strong, fast, painted in a brilliant hue, with a spoiler on top. They usually haunt the coastal waters which are generally calm, especially in the morning. They readily devour a live bait, and will take an artificial like a jig, lure, or a popper. They absolutely drive fly fisherman nuts for their reluctance to hit a fly. The angler that figures out the “Holy Grail” – the secret of taking a roosterfish on the fly – will forever be considered a legend in fishing circles. Diego Torian with big roosterfish. Courtesy of Todd StaleyThe Golfo Dulce in southern Costa Rica offers a vast area to fish for roosters. Las Islas Lodge, Zancudo Lodge, Crocodile Bay Resort and private charters in Golfito and Puerto Jiménez all specialize in catching roosterfish among the offshore species they are all famous for. Except when the afternoon sea breeze kicks in, the gulf is generally like a big lake. While all these places specialize in roosterfish, Oscar Villalobos specializes in trophy roosterfish. Diego Torian, host of Pescando de los Cayos television, who is filming a yearlong series on fishing locations in Costa Rica, had only one day to test the waters in Golfo Dulce after filming an episode with Pablo Chaves from Rio Sierpe. Torian hosts the only Spanish-language fishing show in the United States. A roosterfish swirls on a bait. Courtesy of Bryan Johnson“Your average client doesn’t have the patience to fish big roosters,” said Villalobos. “Sometimes the hardest part is catching the right bait that big roosters like. But once you do, the big ones are usually there.”He prefers bonitos, skip jacks, and small yellowfin tuna to use as live bait and insists a five-pound bait is not too big. When he gets his bait he places it on the same size circle hook he uses for marlin. He says a roosterfish can swallow a bait up to 20% of its weight. This day was exceptionally slow to get the bait he wanted and after four hours he had only one medium-sized bonito. As his search went on, he decided to put his lone bait out near a rock outcropping. Within five minutes, the rod tip bounced, then bent downwards and line started flying off the reel. Torian let the fish run, giving it time to turn the bait in his mouth, and the locked the reel in gear. Line continued to scream off the reel but now against the brake of the reel. Like most roosterfish, this one made numerous short runs and took back the line Torian had gained several times. Eventually the fish tired and checked in at just over fifty pounds before being released. Roosters often cruise with dorsal above surface. Courtesy of Todd StaleyLuckily, getting more bait was not as difficult. In less than a half hour in, he had four more nice baits in his tuna tubes to keep them healthy. Every one of the baits got hit near the same rock and one more roosterfish came to the boat at 65 lbs and was released. The other baits were lost on missed fish or stolen by snapper leaving big teeth marks in the part of the bait that remained. Two big roosterfish on a spinning rod made great film and their mission was complete.Villalobos is owner of Los Isla Lodge and captains one of their boats.
