Rabat – Gabon has reasserted its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan, describing it as an “ideal framework” to reach a solution for Western Sahara.“This initiative is in conformity with international law and the United Nations Charter, and falls within the framework of the right to self-determination,” said Gabon’s permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Michel Xavier Biang.Biang delivered the statement Monday in a speech at the UN General Assembly in New York. Biang reaffirmed Gabon’s support for the UN’s efforts to bring peace and security to Africa and welcomed the UN secretary-general’s efforts, along with his special envoy to Western Sahara’s key role in the political process.Biang also stated that “the resolutions of the Security Council that were adopted since 2007 on this issue have clearly underlined this, including resolution 2414 dated 27 April 2018, which emphasizes mainly the need to search for a realistic, pragmatic, and durable political solution that is based on compromise.”African countries back Morocco’s territorial integrityMany African countries also expressed their support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and recognized the North African country’s efforts to reach an agreed upon and mutually acceptable solution to the Western Sahara issue. In February, Ghana’s Senior Minister Yaw Osafo-Maafo reiterated his country’s support for Morocco’s autonomy plan as a consensual and mutually acceptable solution for the Western Sahara conflict in a meeting with the Moroccan head of government.Mali’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Tieman Hubert Coulibaly said that Morocco’s efforts were “serious,” “credible,” and respect the parameters of the UN Security Council’s observation mission in Western Sahara, while speaking in a press conference in April in Morocco.Senegal and Burkina Faso also recognized the effectiveness of the Moroccan autonomy plan.“We believe that this initiative, developed in good faith, is more than ever an appropriate framework for a happy and lasting solution to this dispute on the basis of a dynamic and realistic compromise,” Gorgui Ciss, Senegal’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, said in October 2016, at UN headquarters.Burkina Faso’s minister of territorial administration and internal security, Simon Compaore, affirmed that Western Sahara is part of Morocco.“Our stance has not changed. Everybody knows it. [Western Sahara] is an integral part of Morocco,” Compaore told MAP in April 2016, following talks with Morocco’s minister delegate to the minister of foreign affairs and international cooperation.
29 January 2008Despite 17 years of crisis in Somalia, the economy there is stronger than that of many countries in Africa in terms of gross domestic product and imports and exports, participants at a United Nations-backed meeting held in Dubai said today. Despite 17 years of crisis in Somalia, the economy there is stronger than that of many countries in Africa in terms of gross domestic product and imports and exports, participants at a United Nations-backed meeting held in Dubai said today. In a final declaration adopted at the end of the meeting organized by the UN Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS), business people from Africa and the Middle East, personalities from Europe and the United States and members of the Somali business community acknowledged economic stagnation in the country, which has not had a functioning government since the fall of Siad Barre’s regime in 1991 and where fighting has intensified in recent months. But they said Somalia’s economy could be boosted through livestock and livestock products, agriculture, money transfer, telecommunications, infrastructure, oil and gas, mining, transport and even tourism, according to a news release from UNPOS.The non-Somali participants “expressed their readiness to consider ways and means to encourage the Somalis to follow a ‘critical path’ that will lead to the stability necessary for political, economic and social development,” the Office said. The meeting requested UNPOS to impress upon the parties in Somalia to put the interests of the country before other interests, and work towards the return of peace and security. read more
Staffan de Mistura, Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s Personal Representative for Southern Lebanon, voiced “deep concern over the continuing and numerous Israeli air violations of the Blue Line,” which marks the line of withdrawal between Lebanon and Israel. On Tuesday 11 Israeli air violations were recorded, with reports indicating that jets flew over areas of southern Lebanon and the western Bekaa. Anti-aircraft fire from Lebanese territory followed. Warning of a “high escalatory potential that threatens the calm that all parties have stated they seek,” Mr. de Mistura repeated his call on the Israeli authorities to halt their air violations. The UN “reminds all parties of their obligations to refrain from any violation of the Blue Line, and that one violation cannot justify another,” he stressed in a statement released in Beirut. read more
“This has been a devastating year for millions of children,” said Anthony Lake, UNICEF Executive Director, in a press release issued by his organization.“Children have been killed while studying in the classroom and while sleeping in their beds; they have been orphaned, kidnapped, tortured, recruited, raped and even sold as slaves,” Mr. Lake said. “Never in recent memory have so many children been subjected to such unspeakable brutality.”As many as 15 million children are caught up in violent conflicts in the Central African Republic, Iraq, South Sudan, Syria, Ukraine and in the Occupied Palestinian territories – including those displaced in their own countries or living as refugees outside their homeland, according to UNICEF.And an estimated 230 million children live in countries and areas affected by armed conflicts, it said.Yet, UNICEF said: “The sheer number of crises in 2014 meant that many were quickly forgotten or captured little attention.”“Protracted crises in countries like Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, continued to claim even more young lives and futures,“ it said. The children’s agency went on to say that 2014 has also posed significant new threats to children’s health and well-being, most notably the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, which has left thousands of children orphaned and an estimated 5 million out of school.“Violence and trauma do more than harm individual children – they undermine the strength of societies,” said Mr. Lake. “The world can and must do more to make 2015 a much better year for every child.”In 2014, UNICEF said children have been kidnapped from their schools or on their way to school, recruited or used by armed forces and groups. It also noted a rise in attacks on education and health facilities and use of schools for military purposes:In the Central African Republic, 2.3 million children are affected by the conflict, up to 10,000 children are believed to have been recruited by armed groups, and more than 430 children have been killed and maimed – three times as many as in 2013; In Gaza, 54,000 children were left homeless as a result of the 50-day conflict during the summer that also saw 538 children killed, and more than 3,370 injured; In Syria, with more than 7.3 million children affected by the conflict including 1.7 million child refugees, the United Nations verified at least 35 attacks on schools in the first nine months of the year, which killed 105 children and injured nearly 300 others.; In Iraq, where an estimated 2.7 million children are affected by conflict, at least 700 children are believed to have been maimed, killed or even executed this year; And in South Sudan, an estimated 235,000 children under five are suffering from severe acute malnutrition. Almost 750,000 children have been displaced and more than 320,000 are living as refugees. UNICEF said it and its partners have worked together to provide life-saving assistance and other critical services like education and emotional support to help children growing up in some of the most dangerous places in the world. In Central African Republic, a campaign is under way to get 662,000 children back to school as the security situation permits. Nearly 68 million doses of the oral polio vaccine were delivered to countries in the Middle East to stem a polio outbreak in Iraq and Syria. In South Sudan, more than 70,000 children were treated for severe malnutrition. In Ebola-hit countries, work continues to combat the virus through support for community care centres and Ebola treatment Units. read more

A paper presented at the 45th Annual Canadian Mineral Processors Operators Conference in Ottowa, Canada has been awarded the 2013 CEEC Medal. The paper titled Energy and Cost Comparisons of HPGR based circuits with the SABC circuit installation at the Huckleberry Mine was co-authored by C. Wang, S. Nadolski, O. Mejia, J. Drozdiak and B. Klein and presents a comprehensive energy and cost comparing an existing SAG mill based circuit at Huckleberry Mine with two proposed circuit featuring comminution energy efficiency technologies. These included high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) and high speed stirred mills. The paper indicated the energy reduction achieved by the alternate flowsheet designs significantly improved the economics of the Huckleberry comminution circuit. The CEEC Medal is a global award intended to recognise and celebrate the contribution of outstanding published papers, articles or case studies profiling beneficial strategies for ecoefficient comminution. CEEC launched the Medal in November 2011 and the worthy 2012 recipients were Rybinski, E., Ghersi, J., Davila, F., Linares J., Valery, W., Jankovic, A., Valle, R., Dikmen S., for their paper Optimisation and Continuous improvement of the Antamina Comminution Circuit (2011) – Proceedings of 5th International Conference on Autogenous and Semi-Autogenous Grinding Technology (SAG2011).In 2013 over 10 papers from around the globe were nominated: an excellent result as publication or presentation of a paper within the past 12 months is a condition of nomination for this award. The Medal review committee is led by CEEC Director, Zeljka Pokrajcic, Principal Process Engineer with WorleyParsons. The committee evaluates all nominated papers on the basis of the papers’ potential to improve energy efficiency; ability for the concepts to be readily adapted to operating plants or incorporated in the design of new circuits; integrity and robustness of results, and finally whether or not the paper communicates its ideas clearly and effectively. The Medal committee recommends the annual recipient to CEEC’s Board of Directors for their approval. This year Zeljka Pokrajcic stated “The papers nominated continue to be high standard from a diverse range of authors and organisations including research institutions, operating sites as well as service and equipment providers. The papers nominated were presented at various forums and conferences around the globe in the last 12 months – a testament to the importance the industry has placed on improving the energy efficiency of comminution processes. The chosen paper presented a clear and thorough comparison including technical and financial analysis of alternatives to the common SABC circuit. It presented a rigorous and well throughout study with convincing outcomes. I enjoyed reading the paper and can appreciate the effort by the authors to ensure the robustness of the study. Well done.” read more

Le 19 juin 2011 à 10:12 • Emmanuel Perrin read more

To see the names and faces and stories on the backpacks, it makes me feel sad for them and their families,” said college student Sylvia Ramirez. The backpack display was the creation of a woman who lost her college-aged brother to suicide. He was one of those guys who appeared healthy and happy on the outside but was suffering on the inside.“I think there is still a stigma about mental health. It’s one of those things that people would rather not talk about until it’s too late,” said Courtney Burke with a group called “Active Minds.”The backpack display has names, faces and personal stories attached. Looking at 1000-backpacks is emotional enough when you see the faces and read the stories, it rips your heart out.“Everyone I have met in the past several years has been affected by this. A brother, sister, dad or mother. A friend, neighbor classmate or teammate, everyone knows someone who took their own life,” Burke said. While emotional and powerful, the purpose of the display attempts to be positive.“There is a stigma about mental illness. It’s easier to ignore until it’s too late,” Burke said. The umbrella group is “Active Minds.” Other groups like “Send Silence Packing” are responsible for the emotional backpack display.“In this case, silence can truly be deadly. The less we talk, the deeper the problems get,” Burke said.It could be the most difficult discussion you ever make. It could also be the most important conversation you’ll ever have. Depression lives in deep, dark places and this program is hoping to shine a little light on those places. Perhaps the only thing more difficult than having the conversation is facing the consequences of not having it.More on this: “Send Silence Packing”. Ratnagiri (Maharashtra): At least 11 persons were killed while one was found alive and another 12 are still missing after a small dam burst near Bhendewadi hamlet in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district, following Tuesday’s torrential downpour, officials said here on Wednesday. “A report on the incident concerning the Tiware Dam was sought by the Prime Minister’s Office, Union Home Ministry, besides Maharashtra Governor and the state headquarters Mantralaya, which has been submitted,” a district official told IANS, requesting anonymity. Congress’ Leader of Opposition Vijay Wadettiwar demanded criminal complaints for murder to be filed against the state government officials, a ruling Shiv Sena party legislator whose company had built the dam, and resignation of minister Mahajan. Both the parties have also demanded suitable compensation for the victims’ families and their rehabilitation at alternative sites. Advertise With Us “The incident happened around 9.30 p.m. (July 2) when the Tiware Dam, which had started overflowing in the evening after heavy rain, breached around an hour later,” Resident Deputy Collector Datta Bhadakawad told IANS. As millions of litres of water gushed out unleashed, it resulted in a floodlike situation, inundating at least seven villages downstream in its path, besides a dozen homes in Bhendewadi with around 24 people living in 11 huts which were washed away. The villages downstream are: Daadar, Akle, Riktoli, Ovali, Kalkavne, and Nandivase, with an estimated total population of around 3,000 in a hilly region, nearly 90 kms from the district headquarters. Disaster Management Officer Ajay Suryawanshi said all the victims were reported from Bhendewadi hamlet, which was adjacent to the dam wall, and there are no casualties from any of the villages downstream. The villages were inundated last night, but now the situation is normal as the dam waters receded and there is a lull in the rains, he added. “Of the people reported missing, the search teams have recovered 11 bodies from the slush left behind by the gushing water, and one was found alive after nearly 20 hours three kms downstream,” Suryawanshi told IANS. He has been identified as a Bhendewadi resident, Baliram K. Chavan and has been admitted to hospital for treatment, though he had no visible external injuries. The warlike search operation was called off at sunset on Wednesday and will be resumed at daybreak on Thursday by the NDRF and police teams using sophisticated satellite-aided gadgets to track the victims who may be stuck in the sludge, forests or under boulders in the vicinity. She wrote in her now defunct website: “Since I was first diagnosed with psoriasis in 2010, I’ve been pretty open about my struggles with it. I have that one patch on my right leg that is the most visible. I don’t even really try to cover it that much anymore. Sometimes I just feel like it’s my big flaw and everyone knows about it, so why cover it?”She continued: “After this many years, I’ve really learned to live with it. I got it for the first time at the DASH store opening in New York. I wore this all-sequin dress and I started getting really itchy; I thought it was just a rash caused by the fabric, but then the rash was COVERING my legs and my mom was like, ‘I think you have psoriasis!!!’ She has it too, and it’s hereditary, so she spotted the symptoms immediately.” read more

This despite the fact that, on the whole, healthcare remains one of the stronger sectors of the Houston economy.Taken together, Memorial Hermann, MD Anderson Cancer Center, and CHI Saint Luke’s have let go more than 2,000 workers since mid-2016. All three have had CEOs step down over the same period.“My guess is there is a slowing in the amount of revenue going into the healthcare sector,” said Vivian Ho, a health economist at Rice University’s Baker Institute, speaking as a guest on Houston Matters. She pointed to several reasons why people are spending less on healthcare. They range from uncertainty over the fate of Obamacare to larger out-of-pocket expenses on employer-provided health insurance.Ho also said the building boom at the Medical Center may have left some companies overextended. “The rate of growth in healthcare has been faster than GDP for years and years and years,” she said, “and so if your executives got used to that and said, ‘If the growth is going to continue on, we need to start building,’ and then they got caught, then you can see lots of problems.”The Texas Workforce Commission reports the Houston healthcare sector lost about 200 jobs between April and May. But it’s still up more than 7,000 jobs over the past year. 00:00 /01:09 X Share read more
Story Links Louisville (41-12) appeared to be cruising on Tuesday, jumping out to a 6-0 lead through the opening three-and-a-half innings. Logan Wyatt, Danny Oriente and Zach Britton each singled to load the bases in the second inning and Henry Davis drove in the first run of the game with a perfectly placed flair down the right field line. Justin Lavey then took advantage of the run-scoring chance with a fielder’s choice to double the advantage. While the Louisville offense couldn’t get going in the later innings, the bullpen kept the Cardinals in the game. Garrett Schmeltz struck out the side in the eighth inning and Michael McAvene struck out five of the six hitters he faced in the ninth and 10th innings. Live Stats BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – In the longest game of the season, the seventh-ranked Louisville baseball team outlasted No. 21 Indiana for an 8-7 victory in 12 innings at Bart Kaufman Field on Tuesday evening. Oriente had three of the Cardinals’ 13 hits on the night, including a run-scoring single in the seventh. Binelas was 2-or-6 at the plate with four RBIs. All nine starters had at least one hit in the win. Listen Live Watch Live Full Schedule Roster Preview IU threatened against McAvene in the ninth with a runner advancing to second on a wild pitch with two outs. The Cardinals attempted to throw the runner out at second, but Zeke Pinkham’s throw sailed into centerfield. However, Lucan Dunn backed up the play and threw a strike to third to cut the man down for the final out of the inning to send the game to extra innings. ACC Network Extra The Louisville pitching staff struck out 23 on the night, the most in a single game for the Cardinals since at least 2000. The 23 strikeouts were the third-most in Division I this season, trailing only Georgia and Clemson, which struck out 26 and 24 respectively in a 20-inning marathon on April 16. The 12-inning contest was also the longest for Louisville since it needed 13 innings to defeat Eastern Michigan in 2017. Indiana (33-19) came to life in the bottom of the fourth though. The Hoosiers plated five runs in the bottom of the frame and then tied the game up with two more runs in the seventh inning. Smith took over in the 11th and kept the night going with a scoreless inning before finishing off the win in the 12th. Luke Smith (5-0) walked the leadoff hitter in the bottom half of the inning, but followed it up with three consecutive strikeouts to seal the victory for the Cardinals. Smith was one of six pitchers out of the UofL bullpen on Tuesday night that combined for 17 strikeouts over nine innings, allowing just two unearned runs. One inning later, one swing of the bat from Binelas blew the game open, as the freshman launched his 11th home run of the season to make it a 5-0 contest. Wyatt later drew a bases loaded walk in the fourth to give the Cardinals a 6-0 edge and looking like they were on the verge of an easy victory. Next Game: Florida State 5/16/2019 | 6:00 PM PDF Box Score With runners on the corners and nobody out in the 12th, Alex Binelas rolled a groundball to the first baseman. The infielder hesitated with his throw before coming to the plate, but Tyler Fitzgerald dove in ahead of the tag for what would prove to be the game-winning run. Louisville will wrap up the regular season with three games against Florida State, starting Thursday night at Jim Patterson Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., ET.
