Shell chairman says oil major will soon be seen ‘as more of a power company’

first_img FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailPrint分享E&E News ($):Chad Holliday, the chairman of Royal Dutch Shell PLC, one of the world’s largest oil producers, said yesterday, “I think you’ll see Shell as more of a power company than an oil company.”“I don’t think it’s too long before you’ll see that transition,” he added, speaking at Stanford Global Energy Dialogues, a webinar series hosted by Stanford University in California. The word “power” implies production and delivery of electricity. Holliday straddled the worlds of old and new, laying out a future where Shell grows into a major clean energy producer while continuing to pump fossil fuels for at least three more decades.Holliday, 72, sits at the awkward intersection of clean energy and oil and gas. He is a corporate titan who was one of the first advocates for the Department of Energy’s clean energy incubator, yet presides over one of the world’s largest carbon emitters. He spoke of “the mammoth amount of work we have to get on with” to head off disastrous climate change. To get there, he laid out a role for Shell in wind, solar, batteries and a smarter electric grid. Meanwhile, it would rely on carbon capture, hydrogen fuel and other technologies that would have Shell continue its core business of making, refining and transporting liquid fuels, with continued reliance on fossil fuels. The Dutch-British conglomerate is one of a number of European oil companies that are making public commitments to a low-carbon future while operating today’s business overwhelmingly on oil. Others include Britain’s BP PLC, France’s Total SA and Italy’s Eni SpA. U.S. oil majors like Chevron Corp. and Exxon Mobil Corp. have been more cautious. Critics of the plans of Shell and other companies say their policies may not lead to pledged emission reductions.[David Ferris]More ($): Shell to be less oil, ‘more of a power company’ — chairman Shell chairman says oil major will soon be seen ‘as more of a power company’last_img read more

The Culture and Development of Drug Trafficking in Brazil

first_imgAs far as values are concerned, the predominant one is sexual pleasure, consumption, prestige and the feeling of power. Self-actualization occurs in seeing the “firm” (the faction) doing well. The relationship between the body and sex is characteristic of the third column in the table, with focus on hedonism and genitalia, as evidenced by the erotic music and dance of the funk parties. The culture of a criminal faction is the set of customs and lifestyle that have evolved from the creation of the organization. In this context, there are funk parties (playing songs by apologists for organized crime and explicit sex, along with the promotion of erotic dances, and the consumption of alcohol and drugs), executions of disaffected members or rivals, styles of dress with golden bracelets and chains, designer clothes, jargon, codes of laws, aesthetics with specific hair styles, tattoos with specific symbolism, and the use of weapons to demonstrate social status. By Dialogo December 17, 2015 Excellent social analysis of this sad world. Thank you Members of a criminal organization interact with the organization and are strongly influenced by the transformations occurring in Western society at different periods, as the following table demonstrates (ASSMAN, 2006, UFSC): -The use of “talk-about” radios made it cheaper to have a surveillance system and make it more agile and incremental with the use of pre-established messages or code words. – With the advent of cell phones, the surveillance system was perfected, and it became feasible to spread a group over a long distance, send text messages and images, and even make international calls, all of which gave leaders a great deal of flexibility; Even though some environments may tend to seduce persons into a life of crime, we shall always have free will in finally deciding which road we choose. Regarding employment, there is enough manual labor for persons to carry drugs back and forth, for day workers (who package the drugs for sale) and those who work in the security system (armed and surveillance), in addition to those who produce the apologist videos and music about the crimes. The culture developed by one faction of organized crime makes gang members earn an income by selling weapons and drugs, guaranteeing food, survival, support and improvement in conditions in the comforts of home or their lifestyles. They referred to this as “serious work.” When I was serving as the commanding officer of the Sampaio Task Force occupying and pacifying favela complexes in Alemão and Penha in 2011, in Rio de Janeiro, I saw that from a tender age children are recruited and become involved in organized crime, climbing the hierarchy. Living under institutionalized rules and actively participating in criminal activities gives the “recruits” an active share in the organization’s results and a feeling that they are part of “something bigger”. The receipt and transmission of modus operandi ensure the continuity of the process. As time passes, the new members climb the ranks, and they bring the adaptations from the institution to society, leading to evolution and modification of the organizational culture. Cultural evolution occurs in the interactions with society. Often, modifications and adjustments occur in imitation of the very institutions that threaten the faction’s survival. This is why new technologies are incorporated into the organization’s operations: The most important geographical location in the controlled territory is linked directly to survival, and as such the organization is extremely territorial and prioritizes property, weapons and merchandise (drugs). The sector of the dominant activity mixes the “bourgeoisie” into the acquisition and resale of drugs and “security” services to guarantee survival. It is more than normal to encounter criminals with ties to a syncretic religion. They mix tarot card readers, fortune tellers and Catholic saints with Candomble. This religious “ethos” has its particularities and is normally subordinate to the organization’s codes and rules. It is very common to make appeals in jobs or issues related to Candomble, even though Christian symbols are used in the tattoos or charms. – The internet, through social networks, became widely used in marketing the organizations’ activities, provoking OSP and rival factions with degrading photos and videos specifically edited for that purpose, or to serve as a deterrent. These activities usually occur in real time. The gang’s enemies could be identified initially as other, rival criminal factions, and then the militias and, finally, Public Security Agencies (OSP). This encourages gang members to construct home-made explosive devices, barriers for police vehicles, containment walls (for shelter from projectiles), install complex surveillance systems, personal security teams for leaders and sources of financing, elaborate escape routes, payments to informants, and acquisition of large-caliber weapons and ammunition. The integrated functions of these systems occur within the context of the faction’s code. The use of technology permeates the various stages of the drug business. A rudimentary process is used in preparing and packaging the drugs. On the other hand, with their financial resources, the criminals purchase sophisticated weapons, smartphones and computers. This shows that criminal factions are affected by the influences of the time in which they exist; however, we see that it is impossible to place the society of criminal organizations completely in the post-industrial column. Art is also a point of intersection between different eras. They produce apologist music and videos for crime in clandestine and rudimentary studios. They also use computers in this process; by the same token, they use graffiti on walls in designs that promote the faction or the local leader. *Fernando Montenegro – Coronel R/1 Brazilian Army Special Forces – Former commanding officer of the Sampaio Task Force that occupied and pacified the complexes of Alemão and Penha in 2011. The familial organization is frequently patriarchal and tribal; polygamy is not rare among faction leaders. In this context, there are real disputes among women over who is most preferred, or the “trustworthy woman,” in the personal lingo. -Smartphones, with their apps, made it possible to send images, emails, messages and chats over the internet in real time anywhere on the planet (Skype, WhatsApp, Messenger, IMO, among others); The culture mixes aspects from different eras. If on the one hand it is traditional, with deep roots, and chauvinist in collections, it also often presents a consumerist side. The predominant mentality fits within the post-industrial column, as evidenced by the hedonistic and consumerist side. Their philosophy is predominantly irrationalism or nihilism, that is, an absence of questioning actions related to the depreciation of traditional values. Keeping in mind their nature, the members of criminal factions normally ignore ecology. Their focus rests on producing raw materials (drugs) to be sold and earn profits. last_img read more

Zadar Cooking Class as an excellent new tourist content

first_imgThe motive of the trip is to get to know new ways and culture of living, and the very essence of tourism is authenticity. And that is why the most important thing in tourism is to tell your story, and not to be a copy of others or to standardize everything, because it is tourists who want an authentic experience. Get to know and experience our culture and way of life with all your senses. And that is why one of the biggest failures of our tourism is that we did not combine “blue” and “green” Croatia, ie because through tourism, where we have high demand and consumption, we do not use our agricultural and meat products, but again encourage imports, and domestic agriculture and small man decays and emigrates. The meaning of tourism is that tourist spending is as much dispersion as possible to the local economy, especially in agriculture, and everything else is just prostitution of tourism through the worst way of the tourism industry.Unfortunately we fall for common mussels, sardines, eggs, lettuce, potatoes, onions… Instead of using all the food from local resources and having thousands of local family farms networked through clusters and supporting tourism, we encourage and buy food from imports. Insane and totally counter productive. The English, French and Germans are the biggest food lovers among travelers, Booking.com reviews reveal to us. If we know that, then we know that we have to offer them our gastronomy as the main motives for coming or at least as an advantage when deciding where to spend the summer. Figuratively, we sell French wine to tourists from France, instead of selling ours to them. On the other hand, the awareness and need for organic, home-made and organic food is growing from year to year, and it is these products that have a 30% higher price in stores.Market as one of the main tourist products When was the last time you were at the market? I love going to the market on Saturdays, a place where you can get to know the city and the people who live in it, ie feel the rhythm of the city. This is exactly what tourists are looking for and want – to get to know our way of living culture. The market is a place where local products are bought, where you can experience the local culture and way of life, the rhythm and customs of the city, meeting the local population, a place of authentic experience of a tourist destination. The local market must be one of the main tourist attractions in every destination.Zadar Cooking class as an excellent new tourist contentAs of today, Zadar’s tourist offer is richer for a new excellent tourist offer. In the wake of all the above, tourists can now take a cooking course in Zadar and get to know the authentic Dalmatian gastronomy. Thus, guests with a professional guide visit the local market and fish market, buy local food and fresh groceries, of course get acquainted with the whole Zadar cultural-historical-tourist story, and after buying groceries go to a cooking course with groceries they just bought at the local market. So simple and ingenious. All under the slogan – A Taste of Croatia. Cook like a local.”The idea has been in my head for four years, but I never found the time to get it out of my head, put it on paper and finally realize it. Now I stumbled and I can say that the city of Zadar now has something new and unique, and how we have enriched the tourist offer. We should always strive and try new things, such courses have been functioning normally outside for a long time, and in Croatia it is only in a few places for now. ” pointed out Tomislav Fain, owner of the agency Terra Travel doo, which launched this excellent new tourist product in Zadar. It is a great story that the guests themselves are stars, ie involved in this unique fun-educational workshop, and thus learn something new and different, ie our local and indigenous. There are currently a couple of different tours on offer, from group cooking, accepted cooking classes, and one family member can cook for the whole family or for friends. The reactions of the guests are extremely positive and everyone is delighted, Fain points out and adds that the workshops are held in their space, in the old town, the chefs are professional as well as tourist guides. In the end, it is important to point out that the entire program will be held during the winter, and a sweet gastronomic offer is planned, where confectioners will.Zadar Cooking Class is an excellent quality content for the entire destination, and I sincerely hope that it will not remain one of the few. If we know that gastronomy is one of the top three reasons to travel, and our biggest advantage is authenticity and diversity, then such projects should be an integral part of the tourist offer of each of our destinations. Of course, if we care about the development of strategic and sustainable tourism.Let us be what we are – it must be our tourist productOur biggest advantage is our incredible diversity and authenticity, and our main product must be what we are – Slavonians, Istrians, Dalmatians… Croats. Unfortunately we are constantly trying to be some bad copy, and the copy has no value, while the original is always unique and creates a motive for coming. We have to sell our indigenous gastronomic story, use local farmers and local resources and pack it all nicely and tell the story, our authentic story.Let us be what we are – it must be our tourist product.last_img read more

WICB frowns on Gayle move by: – April 21, 2011 ST JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – Regional governing body for cricket, the WICB, has granted Chris Gayle a no-objection certificate to play in the lucrative Indian Premier League but says it is “disappointed” in the talismanic opener making himself unavailable for the Pakistan series. In a statement on Wednesday, the WICB said it had been informed by Gayle that he would not be available for the upcoming series because of an offer to play in the IPL.The Board indicated it had been under the impression Gayle was still recovering from injury and was therefore “surprised” the left-hander was preparing to turn out in the IPL.“The WICB is most disappointed in the manner in which Gayle has handled the entire situation, especially given the mature and cooperative manner in which two other players who refused contracts – Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard – made themselves available for selection and agreed to an understanding in the best interest of West Indies cricket,” the statement said.
