John Harnden to speak at the Australian Event Symposium


first_imgCEO of the Cricket World Cup 2015 and newly appointment chairman of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation John Harnden will speak at the Australian Event Symposium, presenting his thoughts on sporting event tourism.Aside from his current roles, Harnden has been at the helm of several of Australia’s biggest sporting events over the years, including as CEO of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, the Australian Grand Prix Corporation and the South Australian Cricket Association.He was awarded an Order of Australia in 2007 for services to sport for his work on the 2006 Commonwealth Games.During his time in the industry, Harnden has overseen some pivotal changes in the Australian sporting events landscape, including as Event Manager at the Australian Grand Prix when the race first took place in Melbourne in 1996 and, during his time as the head of the South Australian Cricket Association, where he was an integral member of the team that put the partnership together between football and cricket as well as setting up the successful redevelopment of Adelaide Oval.Harnden is one of five industry leaders who will be presenting during the plenary sessions on Day 1 of the two day Symposium, to be held in Sydney on 17 and 18 November.The Symposium’s theme in 2015 is Events, Tourism and Destination Branding, focussing on the intersection between the events and tourism industries.Three concurrent streams, Destination Marketing, Case Studies and Project Design and Planning, will host a total of 15 sessions on the second day.Four areas of event tourism – sporting event tourism, business event tourism, cultural event tourism and event tourism in regional Australia – will be explored throughout both days.Registrations are now open for the Symposium, with an Early Bird rate on offer for those who book by 28 September.The Symposium is presented by the Australian Event Awards, which will hold its annual awards dinner on 17 November in Sydney.
